The full Meyers Beach sea cave tour is a long, strenuous, expert level paddle on an exposed section of Lake Superior. This tour cancels all the time because we can only run it when the waves are less than one foot, and that is very rare at Meyers Beach. More than 50% of these tours are canceled for safety reasons.
If this tour is canceled, there is no guarantee that we can get you on a different tour the same day. We always try to move guests to another available option when possible, but availability, timing, staffing, and weather may not allow it.
This tour is also very crowded. Meyers Beach is the most popular sea cave launch in the Apostle Islands, and many outfitters use the same area. That means you should expect lots of other kayaks, other tour groups, and a much busier experience than our quieter sea cave tours.
The launch is also difficult. Guests must walk up and down a long staircase to get to and from the beach, and kayaks and gear must be moved between the parking area and the launch. This makes the tour physically demanding before you even get on the water, and the return can feel even harder after a long paddle.
This tour is not recommended for beginners, people with limited mobility, people who want an easy paddle, or anyone who would be disappointed if the tour is canceled because of waves.
After all of that, there is one reason people still want to do this tour, the Meyers Beach sea caves are the best sea caves in the Apostle Islands. When conditions are perfect, the sandstone cliffs, arches, caves, and exposed shoreline are incredible. However, the crowds, difficulty, stairs, long distance, and high cancellation rate can seriously detract from the experience.
For most guests, we recommend choosing one of our other sea cave tours instead. Those tours are usually easier, less crowded, more reliable, and still offer beautiful Lake Superior sea cave scenery.
