This adventure gives you two incredible experiences in one day: a guided kayak exploration of the Chequamegon Bay sea caves and a guided boat tour of the dramatic Houghton Point formations.
Part 1: Kayak the Chequamegon Bay Sea Caves
We begin at the Bono Creek Boat Ramp, where you’ll launch your kayak into the calm, protected waters of Chequamegon Bay. Immediately, you’ll encounter the striking Bono Creek sea stack and tunnel cave before heading east along a shoreline rich with history. When the kayak portion is complete, you’ll return to the Bono Creek launch site where you will proceed to drive your boat (that we provide) to Houghton Point sea caves, accompanied by a guide that is in a separate boat.
Part 2: Boat the Houghton Point Sea Caves
From the same launch, you’ll switch gears and board your own small boat for the second half of the adventure. Each group drives their own boat (up to 4 people per boat), while your guide travels alongside in a separate vessel to interpret the sights.
Cruising along the sandstone cliffs of Houghton Point, you’ll navigate into a maze of arches, caverns, and wave-carved formations that rival the best sea caves of the Apostle Islands mainland. Because the boats are compact and maneuverable, you can get up close to the caves, experiencing their dramatic acoustics and intricate stone textures from the water.
Duration: 4–5 hours (full-day experience)
Why Choose This Tour
This is the only trip that combines two different ways of exploring the Apostle Islands mainland caves in one seamless day.
