Houghton Point & Chequamegon Bay Sea Caves Adventure
Our most exciting tour combines the breathtaking caves of Bono Creek with the dramatic formations of Houghton Point, all in a seamless one-way journey. No backtracking, no repetition, just six continuous miles of discovery.
We begin at the Bono Creek Boat Ramp, paddling through warm, protected waters in Chequamegon Bay. Right away, you’ll encounter the famous Bono Creek sea stack and its striking tunnel cave before heading east along a shoreline rich with history. As you move forward, you’ll pass multiple river mouths and spot the remnants of the region’s logging era, with old docks and timber pilings still visible in the shallows.
About two miles in, we’ll pause at our sailboat rest stop. Here, you can climb aboard to stretch, enjoy snacks and lemonade (or your own packed meal), and even take a swim in the bay’s warmest waters. After a 20–30 minute break, we’ll continue on toward the Houghton Point sea caves, a highlight of the Apostle Islands mainland. Intricate arches, caverns, and honeycombed sandstone await, set against the calmest paddling waters the region has to offer.
After exploring Houghton Point, you’ll pull alongside our sailboat once again before stepping onto the sandstone shoreline of Houghton Falls State Natural Area. From here, the paddling portion ends, and your self-guided adventure begins. A half-mile hike through Echo Dells leads you past waterfalls and rock formations that feel like inland sea caves. The trail is beautiful but includes some steep sections—good knees and moderate fitness are required.
At the end of the trail, you’ll arrive at Houghton Falls Road, where our team will be waiting to shuttle you back to your car at Bono Creek.
