Open Water Ice Caves Boat Tour

Time and Distance

Approximately 2 hours, about 8 miles round trip, never more than one quarter mile from shore

Launch Location:  Cornucopia, Wisconsin

Group Size:  Four passengers or fewer per boat

This tour explores the open water ice caves along the mainland shoreline during the narrow seasonal window when ice has formed in the caves but Lake Superior remains open. Conditions like this usually occur in December or March, not late fall, and only during very specific weather patterns.

We operate small boats with limited capacity so weight, balance, and safety margins are always conservative. Boats remain close to shore at all times and do not travel to the islands. Routes are selected to minimize exposure and wave energy, and we only run trips when forecasted conditions are near perfect.

This experience is extremely weather dependent. Cancellations are common and can range from roughly fifty percent to seventy percent depending on the season. We typically make the final go or no go decision the night before based on updated marine forecasts.

If we cancel for any reason, including weather, you receive a full refund. When possible, we will attempt to move guests to a Sunday trip if a Friday or Saturday departure is canceled.

Safety is the primary focus of this tour. Capacity limits are strict, routes are conservative, and trips only run when conditions meet our highest safety standards.
